The creation of the park is closely linked to the construction of the Villa Angiolina in 1844 and the owner tended and developed the garden on the property. Plants came as gifts "from all over the world", but also from his own nursery. Since 1882, the Southern Railway Association has rebuilt the old park and planted new parts as part of a project to build a winter sanatorium on the coast.
The park is home to many plant species, including Ginkgo biloba, Libocedrus decurrens (Californian cedar), Musa Basjoo (Japanese banana tree), Sequoia gigantea (giant sequoia). At the base of the garden is a laurel orchard, and one of the park's most famous fields is notable for its camellias.
The concept and shape of the park has remained the same since its foundation.
