The beautiful opera house in Palermo, with its 3,200 seats, is the largest in the whole of Italy.
The impressive opera house, built at the end of the 19th century in the historicist style, is located directly on the Piazza Verdi. The first opera to be performed here was Verdi's Falstaff in 1897. Due to dilapidation, the opera house had to be closed in the 1970s; it was only reopened for its centenary.
The opera house is also known to many film fans: the final scenes in The Godfather III take place in the building – the corresponding areas were renovated at the time especially for filming.
For those who would like to see the opera from the inside but have not been able to get tickets for a performance, a guided tour can be booked.
