Concert hall from the 19th century in Frankfurt city centre
The Alpe Oper Frankfurt organises over 450 events every year. The programme ranges from classical concerts to rock, pop and jazz music to children's and youth events. The Alte Oper is also a centre for international congresses and conferences.
The opera house was opened on 20 October 1880 after eleven years of construction with Mozart's opera Don Juan. Emperor Wilhelm I was among the guests of honour at the evening party.
During a bombing raid in the First World War, the outer façade of the opera house was only slightly damaged. At the end of the Second World War, however, the building burnt to the ground. In order to save "Germany's most beautiful ruin" from final demolition, donations were collected from the public in the early 1950s and initial measures were taken to secure the site. However, more than 20 years had to pass before the reconstruction was officially confirmed. The construction work was completed in August 1981 and consumed a budget of around 200 million DM.
