Der Naturpark Aiguamolls de l'Empordà ist nach dem Ebrodelta das zweitwichtigste Feuchtgebiet in Katalonien.
Ursprünglich erstreckten sich die Sümpfe über die ganze Ebene der Bucht von Roses und des Baix Ter, so dass das Montgrí-Massiv zwischen L'Escala und Torroella, das die Grenze zwischen den Landkreisen Alt Empordà und Baix Empordà bildet, wie eine Insel aus dem Wasser ragte.
Der Naturpark besitzt eine vielfältige Flora und Fauna. Besondere Erwähnung verdienen hier die Tamarisken (Sträucher, die in salzhaltigen Böden leben können), die Meerstrandbinse, das Schilfrohr und der Queller.
Was die Tierwelt betrifft, lassen sich zahlreiche Reptilien (Spanische Wasserschildkröte, Westliche Erzschleiche, Wasserschlange), Amphibien (diverse Frösche, Marmormolch), Fische und Säugetiere (Kaninchen, Wiesel, Europäischer Dachs, Damhirsch) beobachten. Gleiches gilt für die allgegenwärtigen Insekten und die für die Feuchtgebiete sinnbildlichsten Tiere, die Vögel, und zwar sowohl jene, die das ganze Jahr über hier leben, als auch jene, die sich am Ende des Sommers auf ihrem Weg in den Süden oder im Frühjahr auf dem Rückweg in den Norden nur vorübergehend hier aufhalten.
In diesem Sinne können interessierte Besucher leicht verschiedene Entenarten, Fischreiher, Edelreiher und Kuhreiher ausmachen, Rohrweihen vorbeigleiten sehen, Kormorane dabei beobachten, wie sie ihr Gefieder putzen oder die Eleganz langbeiniger Vögel wie der Kraniche, der Flamingos, der Watvögel oder der markanten Störche, die in den 1980er Jahren wieder im Park angesiedelt wurden, bewundern. Auch andere Arten, wie das Purpurhuhn oder der Otter, wurden im Rahmen der menschlichen Bemühungen zur Wiederherstellung der letzten Sümpfe des Empordà erfolgreich wieder eingeführt.

Die Routen El Cortalet - Mas del Matà (2 km) und Mas del Matà - Platja del Matà - Les Llaunes (2 km) sind aufgrund ihrer topografischen Merkmale am wenigsten problematisch für Rollstuhlfahrer und andere Menschen mit eingeschränkter Mobilität.

Die Route El Cortalet - Estany Europa weist hingegen mehr Schwierigkeiten auf.

Es stehen zwei behindertengerechte WCs zur Verfügung. Eines im Besucherempfangszentrum El Cortalet und ein weiteres an der Route Mas del Matà - Platja del Matà - Les Llaunes.

Des Weiteren gibt es 3 über Holzstege zugängliche Beobachtungsstellen, die auch für Rollstuhlfahrer erreichbar sind.
