Many rare plants and animals live in this unique biotope. Typical of the Struffelt is the purple moorgrass or “pipe grass”. In olden times, pipe smokers used stalks of this tufted grass as pipe cleaners, because the smooth stalks did not get stuck when pulled through a pipe. Elevated wooden footpaths allow hikers to cross the heights of the High Fens while keeping their feet dry and without harming the rare plant and animal species here.
