Der Rohrsee ist ein kleiner, seichter See, der heute eine Wasserfläche von etwa 50 Hektar aufweist. Er entstand aus einem Toteisloch nach der Würmeiszeit und ist im Mittel etwa 1,2 Meter tief. Seine unmittelbare Umgebung stellt einen bedeutenden Brutplatz sowie ein überregional wichtiges Überwinterunggebiet vieler, zum Teil stark gefährdeter Vogelarten dar. Insgesamt wurden im Gebiet über 200 Vogelarten festgestellt, mehr als 80 brüten regelmäßig. Besonders erwähnenswert ist der wieder rückläufige Brutbestand des Schwarzhalstauchers, sowie der Wasserralle. Selten wurden auch Bruten der Schwarzkopfmöwe nachgewiesen. In den verschilften und verlandeten Uferbereichen brüten Schilfrohrsänger, Drosselrohrsänger und Beutelmeise. Im Frühwinter ist die Wasserfläche ein wichtiger Rastplatz für die Schnatterente und andere Entenarten.
Das Gebiet um den See und der See selbst sind seit 1938 als Naturschutzgebiet ausgewiesen. Dennoch werden einige Bereiche um den See noch immer intensiv landwirtschaftlich genutzt.
