Groningen/ Stadspark

The Stadspark (City Park) was constructed in the early twentieth century, initiated by Groningen captain of industry Jan Evert Scholten (1849-1918) for which he was honoured with a monument on the Concourslaan. Landscape architect Leonard Springer designed the park and was assisted by Director of Municipal Works J.A. Mulock Houwer. Part of the park, with the tree collection in it, has become seperated from the main park by the construction of the Western ring road around the city. In the main part is the race track, the petting zoo and the recently renovated playground. The location is regularly used for events and concerts. The Stadspark is now classified as a municipal monument.The Gasuniegebouw, voted the most beautiful building in the Netherlands in 2007, is now a fixed part of the Groningen skyline. It was designed by Architectural firm Albert en Van Huut and is characteristic of organic architecture, in which building on a human scale and wellbeing are central.
