Viehpferch Vermunt

Der Montafoner Daniel Schofner, der sömmert im Jahr 1780 gut 30 Milchkühe, mehr als 2000 Schafe und mehr als 200 Stück Jungvieh auf Vermunt, auch 200 Pferde sind ihm anvertraut worden. All die Tiere hat er von verschiedenen Besitzern zur Alpbestossung «von allen Orten eingesammelt». Fünf Hirten hat Daniel Schofner angestellt, und wenn diesen im Herbst auch nur ein Stück Vieh fehlt, haften sie dafür mit ihrem Lohn.

Noch heute kommen in den Alpen jeden Sommer viele Nutztiere abhanden, vornehmlich Schafe aus unbehirteten Herden. Noch heute sieht man in der Silvretta aber auch die wohl älteste Art, wie man dem Verlust von Tieren entgegenwirken kann: Viehpferche.

Seit Jahrtausenden treibt man in so einem Pferchen, wie er hier auf Vermunt zu sehen ist, die Nutztiere zusammen. Das tat man meist über Nacht, aber auch bei sogenannten Schneefluchten, bei Wintereinbrüchen, wie sie in der Silvretta auch mitten im Sommer vorkommen können. Die Pferche dienten auch zum Schutz vor Bären oder Wölfen, zudem liessen sich in den Steingehegen die Tiere auch einfacher melken als auf den Weiden.

Genutzt werden solche Gehege in der Silvretta sicher schon seit gut 2500 Jahren. Dies zeigten archäologische Untersuchungen in der Val Tasna auf der Engadiner Seite des Silvretta-Hauptkamms. Neben den Resten eines vorzeitlichen Geheges sind dort noch immer «baugleiche» Viehpferche im Gebrauch. Die alte Bauweise ergibt schliesslich auch diesen Vorteil: Nutzt man die Lesesteine auf den Alpweiden zum Bau der Trockensteinmauern, hat man auch gleich bessere, von Steinen befreite Alpwiesen.
