The Loreley Rock is a slate rock in the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley near Sankt Goarshausen.

For a long time, "Loreley" (from the Celtic "ley" for rock and from Middle High German "luren" = to lurk, "lorren/lurren" = to howl/scream, "Lur" = elf or from the Rhenish "luren" = to hum) was only used to describe the rock. After Clemens Brentano, and subsequently other poets such as Heinrich Heine, became preoccupied with the myths surrounding the rock and the dangerous Rhine passage for skippers, the supposedly old German legend of a mermaid who beguiled the Rhine skippers with her song from the 132 m high slate rock was born, so that they no longer paid attention to the dangerous current and the rocky reefs and wrecked their boats.
