Observatoire ornithologique des Rohrmatten
Observatory accessible from the parking lot (2.8 km). Access impossible during periods of high water or flooding. For a discovery with schoolchildren, please contact the Environment Department of the town of Sélestat beforehand.
Located in the Ill*Wald, a regional nature reserve, the Rohrmatten site (approx. 14 ha) is a former poplar grove damaged by a storm in 1988, which was converted into a reedbed by the town of Sélestat between 1992 and 1995.
After harvesting the logs from the storm, and leaving the stumps in situ, a network of ponds and channels was created to provide a variety of habitats for wildlife. The area is home to over 130 species of birds, which nest, feed or migrate here. It is also a spawning ground for pike and an ideal habitat for the beaver, reintroduced in 1999.
Last but not least, the Rohrmatten is a remarkable botanical site, notably for the presence of heritage species such as the marsh spurge, which is on the regional list of protected species.
New access this autumn via the pedestrian footbridge at dam B.10 on the Marckolsheim road, and parking area for motor vehicles at the Hollockgraben entrance.
