Der See wurde 1885 vom Bad Berkaer Verschönerungsverein mit der Forstverwaltung angelegt. Sein Name geht angeblich auf eine Sagengestalt, und zwar auf die schöne Nixe Hertha zurück, die in Vollmondnächten an solch einem See erschien.
