At 728.5 metres, Gerberstein mountain is the highest elevation in the Wartburg district and the first mountain in the Thuringian Forest area to be mentioned in a document. In the year 993, it was mentioned by name as Gervuenestein mountain in Mark Breitungen’s boundary description. It is believed that a fortified castle complex once stood here; however, no traces of it remain.
In 1940, Gerberstein mountain was listed as a natural monument area. From the viewing platform you can enjoy a fantastic view over the Werra Valley and the Rhön region.
