Die Externsteine leiten ihren Namen vermutlich von einer Form von "Egge" und "Steine" her. Der Name bezeichnet also ihren Standort. Die Felsgruppe ragt in sonst fast steinfreien Umgebung bis zu 40 Meter aus dem Boden heraus. Jährlich besuchen etwa eine Million Menschen die frühere germanische Kultstätte.
