The Civic Tower of Castelfranco Veneto, built between the 12th and 13th centuries, is one of the most recognizable symbols of the walled city. Also known as the Front Tower or Free Tower, it rises at the center of the eastern curtain, facing Treviso, the municipality that founded the castle as a stronghold of its western border.
Passing through the Tower means reading the various dominations that have marked Castelfranco. Under the entrance vault, the cart of the Carraresi is still visible, a memory of their brief rule, while on the external facade, the large blue dial of the clock is surmounted by the Lion of St. Mark, commissioned by the podestà Pietro Gradenigo in 1499.
The Tower was part of a more complex defensive structure, equipped with a moat and an additional city wall intended to protect government representatives and the garrison. With the addition of the bell chamber during the Venetian rule, it reached its current 43 meters in height, becoming the main observation point of the city.
Ascending to the upper floors, one encounters details related to the life and functioning of the Tower, including the internal clock dial, painted in a mirrored way to allow for monitoring and adjustment. From the top, the gaze embraces the historic center, the city walls, and the surrounding plain, helping to understand the strategic position chosen for the founding of Castelfranco.
