Die Villa wurde im Auftrag des niederdeutschen Dichters Fritz Reuter in den Jahren 1866 bis 1868 errichtet. Das Museum beherbergt eine bedeutende Sammlung zu Leben und Werk des Komponisten Richard Wagner.

Der bedeutende niederdeutsche Dichter Fritz Reuter ließ sich 1866 bis 1868 am Fuße der Wartburg im Stil der italienischen Neorenaissance ein Wohnhaus erbauen, in dem er bis zu seinem Tod 1874 lebte. Nachdem die Stadt Eisenach 1895 die Wagner-Sammlung "Oesterleinsammlung" mit rund 20.000 Objekten angekauft hatte, wurde das Haus 1897 unter dem Namen "Reuter-Wagner-Museum" eröffnet. Zu sehen sind Mobiliar und Teile der Hinterlassenschaft von Fritz Reuter und die Richard-Wagner-Ausstellung mit Bildern und Büsten, Briefen und Schriften sowie einer umfangreichen Bibliothek, bestehend aus etwa 5.000 Bänden.
