Thomas Mann and his wife Katia visited Nida for the first time in the summer of 1929 and, according to the writer himself, were "captured by the indescribable uniqueness and beauty of that nature, the fantastic world of wandering dunes" and quickly decided to buy a permanent home here.
In 1930 this summer house was built in Nida (architect Herbert Reissmann), where the writer and his family spent three summers (1930-1932).
In 1939 summer house was nationalized and converted into a hunting lodge "Elk Forest".
In the post-war period, the building was badly damaged. It was renovated a few times in the 20th century.
Since 2014 there is a new exposition in the museum.
Today, Thomas Mann's house serves as a museum and also hosts chamber music concerts, literary evenings, international meetings and Thomas Mann Festival.
