At the City Museum Obermühle, visitors experience a journey through the everyday and technical history of Braunfels:
There is the 2000 renovated water wheel with fascinating technology from 1875, remnants of the historic hammer mill from 1728, original tools and works by Braunfels craftsmen, as well as examples of women's domestic work.
The exhibition is complemented by insights into former living conditions and a lovingly assembled toy collection.
The Obermühle – the oldest stone building and vibrant historical station of Braunfels'
First mentioned in a document in 1445, the Obermühle is one of the most significant historical structures in Braunfels – and is also the oldest preserved stone building in the city.
It was in operation for more than 500 years: initially as a mill, later also as a hammer works and a waterworks for the water supply of Braunfels. It ceased its technical operations in 1971.
Just a year later, in 1972, the local historical working group established the city museum here – a place where history comes to life. Visitors can expect a fascinating tour through the technology, everyday life, and crafts of past centuries: the waterwheel renewed in 2000 with technology from 1875, remnants of the hammer works from 1728, original tools of Braunfels craftsmen, household items from family life in earlier times, as well as a lovingly curated collection of toys.
A special highlight: The historical stone vault of the former hammer works now offers an exceptional atmosphere for civil weddings.
Visiting the city museum is especially worthwhile during the annual antique and flea markets – when history, crafts, and collectibles come together in a lively way.
