Palazzo Castelmur

The builder of the palazzo, Giovanni Castelmur, was the son of a confectioner who had emigrated to Nice. He returned to his parents' homeland in 1840 and extended the patrician house of the Redolfi family, built in 1723, with a towered extension in the Lombard/Venetian style. Construction work on the palazzo was completed in 1854. The successful combination of old and new and the lavish redecoration of the entire complex are the work of various Milanese specialists: the engineer and architect Giovanni Crassi-Marliani, the master mason Giovanni Pedrazzini and the painter Gaspare Tirinanzi. The majority of the other excellent craftsmen and artisans also came from nearby Lombardy. The interior design of the castle is in keeping with the exterior design, but the interior furnishings are much more splendid. With the exception of one room, the living rooms of the former Casa Redolfi, which are located in the block building, are covered with lacquered paneling and wallpaper. In the new extension, you can admire the dining room, the salon, the rooms wallpapered in red and green and the four small tower rooms. The walls and ceilings of the most representative rooms are decorated with murals, the most striking of which are the trompe l'oeil paintings.

The Comune was able to acquire the palazzo from the last descendants of the Castelmur family in 1961 and turn it into a museum. It is open to the public during the summer months.
