The National Museum of Antarctica – Trieste Branch takes visitors on a journey of discovery through the white continent via artifacts, historical maps, multimedia installations, and accounts of Italy’s great explorations and scientific expeditions.
Located in San Giovanni Park in Trieste, the National Antarctic Museum – Trieste Branch is one of the three branches of the national museum dedicated to research and the dissemination of scientific knowledge about the Antarctic continent. The Trieste branch, inaugurated in 2004, specializes in the history of Antarctic exploration and in marine geology and geophysics research, highlighting Italy’s contribution to the study of Earth’s most remote continent. The exhibition is organized into three sections dedicated to the historiography of Antarctica, the great explorations of Robert Falcon Scott, Roald Amundsen, and Ernest Shackleton, and the Italian expeditions carried out as part of the National Antarctic Research Program (PNRA).
Historical maps, scientific artifacts, photographs, scenic reconstructions—including the striking stern of Shackleton’s ship, the Endurance—and numerous interactive installations offer insights into the Antarctic environment, climate, paleoclimate, and the research activities conducted on the “White Continent.” An immersive experience that combines history, exploration, and science, offering a fascinating glimpse into one of the most extreme and unspoiled places on the planet
