Das Gebäude, im Stil eines mittelalterlichen Profanbaus 1938 durch den Weimarer Architekten Ostermann erbaut, wurde 1950 als Museum eröffnet und 1988 unter Denkmalschutz gestellt.
Das Museum ist aus dem 1825 gegründeten Vogtländischen Altertumsforschenden Verein zu Hohenleuben, einem der ältesten deutschen Geschichtsvereine, hervorgegangen. Es beherbergt folgende Sammlungen: Frühgeschichte, Ortsgeschichte, Handwerk, Naturkunde, Geologie, Ausstellung zum Bauerngeneral Georg Kresse. Das Museum zeigt jährlich mehrere Sonderausstellungen. Außerdem befindet sich hier eine wissenschaftliche Bibliothek mit ca. 40.000 Bänden heimatgeschichtlicher Literatur des gesamten deutschsprachigen Raumes sowie Spezialsammlungen zur reußischen und vogtländischen Geschichte.
