The Groitzsch town tower is the remains of the old Romanesque church of St. Aegidius. It was completely destroyed, apart from the tower, by a fire in 1513. The 23-metre-high tower was not restored until 1714, when it continued to serve as an armoury, seiger tower, prison and guard's quarters. It was completely renovated between 1993 and 1995 and has housed a local history exhibition at the Groitzsch Museum ever since. You can climb the 60 steps to the top of the tower and enjoy the view over the town and the Elster floodplain.
