Goethe House Frankfurt
Birthplace of the famous German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
When Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born in Frankfurt in 1749, his parents' house on Großer Hirschgraben consisted of two interconnected half-timbered buildings. In the mid-1750s, his father Johann Caspar Goethe had a magnificent multi-storey, late Baroque building built on this basis, which the poet lived in with his family until he left for Weimar in 1777.
After his father's death, the house changed hands several times. In 1859, it was acquired by the Scientific Citizens' Association, restored and furnished in accordance with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's notes and finally opened to the public.
