Literárne múzeum SNK (LM SNK) sídli v centre Martina v historickej budove z konca 19. storočia. Samotná budova, ako prvé sídlo Matice slovenskej, bola v roku 1961 vyhlásená za národnú kultúrnu pamiatku. Už v roku 1870 v nej bola návštevníkom sprístupnená prvá národná múzejná expozícia archívneho, knižného, galerijného a národopisného zamerania. Dnes slúži ako priestor na prezentáciu dejín slovenskej literatúry a knižnej kultúry. Stála expozícia predstavuje návštevníkom vývoj slovenskej literatúry od jej počiatkov v 9. storočí až po súčasnosť. Dopĺňajú ju dočasné výstavy. Celoročne múzeum organizuje aj kultúrne a vzdelávacie podujatia so vzťahom k slovenskej literatúre.
Múzeum ponúka tiež lektorované prehliadky Národného cintorína, kde sú pochované významne slovenské osobnosti.
Táto pôvodne novorenesančná a neskôr neobarokovo renovovaná budova bola postavená v roku 1865 z národnej zbierky. Tisíckou zlatých vtedy prispel aj cisár František Jozef I. Stavba bola vybudovaná pre účely Matice slovenskej, ktorá bola založená 4. 8. 1863 na 1 000. výročie príchodu vierozvestcov a spolupatrónov Európy sv. Cyrila a sv. Metoda. Stánok otvorili o dva roky neskôr.
Odohrával sa tu kultúrno–spoločenský život slovenského národa, v 60. a 70. rokoch 19. storočia tu osobnosti formulovali myšlienky prežitia útlaku. Z „národnej svetlice“, lebo aj tak budove hovorili, vychádzali knihy a časopisy šíriace tradíciu, osvetu, krásu a vzdelanie.
Pôsobenie prestavby po zatvorení MS roku 1875, ako aj zaobchádzanie počas následného pôsobenia súdu i pošty sa spolu so zubom času podpísali na stave budovy. Po viacerých čiastkových rekonštrukciách jej autentickú podobu vrátila až rozsiahla pamiatková úprava v 80. roku 20. storočia, ktorý umožnila aj nové funkčné využitie.
Dnes je budova sídlom Literárneho múzea Slovenskej národnej knižnice so stálou expozíciou o vývojových etapách a kľúčových osobnostiach slovenskej literatúry od jej počiatkov v 9. storočí až do súčasnosti. Jedinečná je tiež jej dvorana s bustami významných národných dejateľov.
Opening times
Od 1. mája, 2025 je múzeum z dôvodu rekonštrukcie dočasne zatvorené až do odvolania. Ďakujeme za pochopenie.
