Ducal Museum, Gotha

The Ducal Museum of Gotha is located opposite Friedenstein Castle in the castle park. Construction work on the building, which was designed in Neo-Renaissance style, began in 1864. The building was opened fifteen years later, providing a new home for the ducal collection and its wide variety of exhibits. The museum was divided up into the Art Chamber, Chinese Chamber, Natural History Chamber and Copper Engraving Chamber, as well as the Painting Gallery and Plaster Cast Collection. The ducal collection suffered substantial losses towards the end of the Second World War. After in-depth restoration work, the museum was reopened in 2013 and now contains permanent exhibitions with different focuses spread out over three floors. The museum exhibits include ancient Egyptian relics, antiques, paintings and graphics by the Cranach father and son, works by Dürer, Rubens and C.D. Friedrich, sculptures by Houdon and Adriaen de Vries, porcelain from Meißen, fans and rare treasures from Asia.
