Office de tourisme Pyrénées Cerdagne
Housed in a magnificent 18th-century farmhouse, Cal Mateu-Musée de Cerdagne is a fine example of the great farms of the Cerdagne region. The history of the estate is intimately linked to the history of the region. In the 17th century, the signing of the Treaty of the Pyrenees (1659) divided Cerdagne in two, between France and Spain.
From a modest farmhouse to a vast estate, the house, owned by the Sicart family, was gradually enriched to match its status as a representative of royal power. Indeed, for 100 years, the Sicarts, from father to son, held the office of viguier, the King of France's representative for Cerdagne. With the turmoil of the French Revolution, the viguier's office disappeared, and the estate moved on to other destinies. In 1810, it was sold to a prosperous Barcelona merchant, Mathieu Riu, and took on its current name: Cal Mateu. Nevertheless, the estate continued to be farmed until the 1990s, when Jacques and Marie Bragulat, who had farmed the property since 1952, retired.
Cal Mateu-Musée de Cerdagne, with its astonishing high-altitude vegetable garden, has been awarded two labels (Monuments Historiques 1984 / Musée de France 1997), and in turn tells the story of the estate and our region. Through its mainly agricultural collections, presented in permanent and temporary exhibitions, guided tours, cultural activities and events, discover the many facets of the Cerdagne region, its history, its frontiers, its riches and its evolution over the centuries.
