Der um 1534/37 erbaute und heute als Althammer bezeichnete Kupferhammer befindet sich außerhalb und östlich der in diesem Gebiet erhaltenen Hüttenmauer. In den Jahren 1958-1960 erfolgte die Instandsetzung der technischen Ausstattung des Hammers unter Verwendung der Ausrüstung vom Neuhammer. Die technische Ausstattung besteht aus drei, von einem Wasserrad über eine Nockenwelle angetriebenen, Schwanzhämmern. Ein zweites Wasserrad betätigt über Gestänge den Blasebalg. Die Radstuben befinden sich an der Ostseite des Gebäudes. Unmittelbar über dem Schmiedefeuer befindet sich die bis in Firsthöhe geführte, mit einer Krone versehene markante Schmiedeesse des Althammers. Der Hammer diente bis 1914 zur Herstellung von Kupferblechen und deren Verarbeitung zu Gebrauchsgegenständen, zu denen Schalen, Kessel verschiedenster Art zählten. Seit seiner Wiederherstellung 1960 wird er als museale Schauanlage genutzt.
