The Ahr Gate forms the southern gate of the city fortification of Ahrweiler and owes its name to the fact that it is closest to the river Ahr. In older designations, it is also referred to as Arportze and is considered one of the most impressive city gates of the Ahrweiler city fortification.
It consists of a gate tower and two flanking three-story half-towers. In the gate passage, there is a high relief of Christ carrying the cross made of tuff stone from the 16th century. At the beginning of 1945, the Ahr Gate was destroyed by bombs and was rebuilt by the citizens until 1958. The patron saint of the so-called Ahrhut is St. Barbara.
The history and impressive construction make the Ahr Gate not only a functional element of the city fortification but also an architectural jewel that fascinates visitors with its splendor and historical significance.
The Ahr Gate is a registered cultural monument.
