The Vršič Pass road, built by Russian prisoners of war in a very short time, was crucial for supplying the Austro-Hungarian Army. The Russian Chapel was erected in memory of its builders.
The road was built in only six months in harsh conditions by the Russian POWs (12,000), captured on the Eastern Front and brought under the peaks of the Julian Alps. A road connection from Kranjska Gora over the Vršič Pass (1,611 m) to Trenta was key to supplying the Austro-Hungarian troops on the Isonzo Front and to transport the wounded from the front. The section of the road from Kranjska Gora to Vršič is officially known as the Russian Road. Photos: Matevž Lenarčič
