Der höchste unvergletscherte Übergang zwischen Reschenpass und Brennerpass ist das Timmelsjoch. Verbunden werden das Ötztal (Sölden) mit dem Passeiertal (St. Leonhard in Passeier).

1897 beschloss der Tiroler Landtag eine Straße über den Timmel, doch wurden andere Projekte vorgezogen. Erst nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde unter dem damaligen Tiroler Landeshauptmann Eduard Wallnöfer das Straßenprojekt wieder aufgenommen. Erst 1968 war die Verbindung in beide Richtungen frei für den Straßenverkehr.
Heute ist die Straße besonders bei Radrennfahrern beliebt, da sie aufgrund der sehr gleichmäßigen Steigung eine ganz besondere sportliche Herausforderung darstellt.
Jährlich findet der Ötztal-Radmarathon über das Timmelsjoch statt.
