Schon in vorrömischer Zeit verband ein Saumpfad über den Reschenpass das obere Inntal im Norden mit dem Vinschgau im Süden. Der Pass war Teil der um das Jahr 50 eröffneten Römerstraße Via Claudia August, die schnell zur Hauptverkehrsader wurde.
Zur Grenze wurde der Reschenpass erst 1919. Bis heute finden sich hier zahlreiche Befestigungsanlagen; Relikte der Grenzneuziehung in Folge der Pariser Friedensverhandlungen.
Die Passhöhe selbst befindet sich jedoch vollständig auf italienischem Staatsgebiet. Sie liegt auf 1504 Metern ü.d.M. mitten in der Ortschaft Reschen, ca. 2 Kilometer südlich der staatlichen Grenze.
Obwohl der Reschenpass auf eher geringer Höhe liegt, befinden sich in unmittelbarer Umgebung einige Dreitausender. Da erheben sich, von Wolken umspielt, der Wildnördererkogel oder der Danzebell.
