Der Mendelpass ist der tiefste Einschnitt entlang des Bergkammes zwischen dem Penegal im Norden und dem Monte Roen im Süden. Er verbindet das Überetsch mit dem Nonstal, also Südtirol mit dem Trentino. Somit ist der Pass seit alters her deutsch-italienische Sprachgrenze.
Die Mendelpassstraße ist ganzjährig befahrbar und aufgrund ihrer 17 steilen Kehren und der vielen Aussichtspunkte eine beliebte Herausforderung für Radfahrer und Motorradfahrer. Mit dem Bau der Straße wurde 1879 begonnen, 8 Jahre später wurde sie eröffnet. Bald schon musste sie erweitert werden, da sich der Tourismus positiv entwickelte.
Einst war der Mendelpass Kurort vieler Adeliger. Unter anderem logierten hier die Kaiserin Sissi, Erzherzog Ferdinand, verschiedenste Minister der Republik und sogar Mahatma Gandhi.
Auch heute ist der Mendelpass Treff- und Ausgangspunkt für Wanderungen, aber auch Aufenthaltsort für Sommerfrischler. Überall im Wald verstreut finden sich die liebevoll geschmückten Ferienhäuschen.
