Fünf Jahre lang von 1810 bis 1815 verlief am Gampenpass die Grenze des neugegründeten italienischen Staates unter Napoleon und dem Königreich Bayern. In Jahren von 1938 bis 1942 baute es das italienische Militär zu einer Sperrstellung, Teil des Alpenwalls, aus. Reste dieser Militärstellung kann man auch heute noch sehen.
Heute gehört der Gampenpass wegen seiner im Durchschnitt relativ moderaten Steigungen zu den beliebtesten Auffahrten für Rennradfahrer. Vor allem die Rundfahrt von Bozen über den Mendelpass und Gampenpass nach Lana und zurück nach Bozen zählt zu den klassischen Trainigsstrecken der lokalen Radfahrer. Für Wanderer ist der Gampenpass der Ausgangspunkt für den Anstieg zum bekannten Aussichtsberg Laugen oder für gemütliche Spaziergänge zum Felixer Weiher.
