Der Hofapotheker und bedeutende Biologe Wilhelm Baur betrieb maßgeblich die Herstellung eines Fußweges von Döggingen durch die Gauchachschlucht bis zur Mündung in die Wutach.

Ihm zu Ehren trägt der 1905 eröffnete Wanderweg den Namen Wilhelm-Baur-Weg. Der Schwarzwaldverein Donaueschingen brachte 1927 eine Gedenktafel in der Gauchachschlucht an.
