Designed along the lines of the Parthenon on the Acropolis in Athens, Valhalla was intended to serve as a hall of fame and honor for important personalities of the "German tongue" - a reminiscence of the mythical Hall of the Fallen from Norse mythology. Its purpose was to strengthen German national consciousness, which had been shattered by the Napoleonic Wars.
The monumental building is enthroned on a massive, multi-level substructure, from which an enormous flight of steps leads to the columned portal. Inside, the hall houses a collection of over 130 marble busts and 65 commemorative plaques, ranging from rulers and generals to scientists and artists. This collection is still being added to at irregular intervals.
Valhalla impresses not only with its classical architecture and national symbolism, but also with its picturesque location. The view from the steps of the temple over the Danube valley is one of the most impressive landscape panoramas in Bavaria.
