In der Widderstatt erstreckte sich ein einst bedeutendes Dorf, das vor 2500 bis 2000 Jahren von Bauern und Handwerkern bewohnt war. Seine Entdeckung erfolgte im Jahr 1954 durch Klaus Heydenbluth. In den Jahren von 1966 bis 1981 fanden hier unter der Leitung von Prof. Dr. Behm-Blancke und W. Gall vom Museum für Ur- und Frühgeschichte Thüringens umfangreiche Ausgrabungen statt, an denen Heimatfreunde, der Naturschutzbeauftragte Walter Heurich, Studenten der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena und Schüler der POS Jüchsen unter ihrem Direktor W. Büttner beteiligt waren. Die freigelegten Grundrisse von Gehöften und die wertvollen Fundstücke der Siedlung, die sich im Einflussbereich des damaligen militärischen und wirtschaftlichen Zentrums auf dem befestigten Kleinen Gleichberg befanden, stellen einen bedeutenden Beitrag zur internationalen Keltenforschung dar.
