Thanks to the generous support of Dean Johann Madersbacher, 700 fallen and missing soldiers from our town have found a permanent resting place in the heart of Saalfelden.
The Saalfelden Comradeship Association, under Chairman Peter Innerhofer, was able to create this memorial at great financial expense. The dedication was performed by Auxiliary Bishop Jakob Mayr. In addition to high-ranking representatives from public life, the Austrian Armed Forces, the Comradeship Association, and the Order of St. George, 80 associations took part in this celebration. The statue of St. George, to whom this memorial is dedicated, was created by Saalfelden sculptor Klaus Moroder.
The following inscription can be read on the base of the statue of St. George:
In grateful reverence, this memorial is dedicated to all those who died and went missing in both world wars, who sacrificed their lives for our homeland in foreign lands.
May it also serve as a memorial to all those whose hearts were wounded by the war. May it bring them faith and comfort, that even the horrors imposed upon us were not in vain, but can be overcome and transformed in our hearts if we do not forget the dead and truly understand the meaning of their sacrifice!
When we become aware of their mission to sow peace, so that the heart-wrenching diversity of suffering, despair, and courage, bitterness and loyalty, was not in vain!
They urge us to overcome hatred, to seek peace, and to help build a better world.
