Schmidtburg Castle
Schmidtburg Castle is one of the oldest and most important castle complexes in the Hunsrück region. Its origins date back to 926, when three Frankish noblemen traded land to the St. Maximin monastery in Trier in order to build a castle to protect themselves from the Hungarians, who were also threatening our region at the time.
There are many indications that this castle is the Schmidtburg; however, it can be assumed that this medieval complex was only intended as a place of refuge and bore little resemblance to the castle complex that has been preserved as a ruin. Initial clearing work by the scouts in the late 1960s, initial work by the municipality of Schneppenbach in 1972 - 1975 and major excavation and securing work as part of job creation measures in the 1980s ensured that the castle complex became accessible again. As a result, this important architectural monument has been preserved for the inhabitants of the Kirner Land as a monument to their local history and can inspire them to reflect on their own history.
The castle complex is freely accessible to all.
Unfortunately, Schmidtburg Castle is not accessible to people with walking disabilities. The access routes are also not accessible with aids.
