The bronze monument depicts the historically recreated figure of the Gießen "Schlammbeiser." In November 2005, the small monument was erected between the church square and the marketplace. It shows the Gießen Schlammbeiser. The name can be traced back to the "Schlemp-Eiser," who, in the times before there was a sewer system in Gießen, removed feces and other waste from buckets in front of houses. With their long, hook-equipped iron poles, these workers pulled the buckets out from between the houses, emptied them onto a cart, and transported the waste away. They also cleared blocked canals with their iron poles.
Schlammbeiser is now the nickname for longtime residents of Gießen.
