The Scheffel Watchtower is a monument in honor of the German poet Joseph Victor von Scheffel (1826–1886) and is located above Haardt, a district of Neustadt an der Weinstraße, in the Palatinate Forest. The structure was erected in 1928 on the occasion of his 100th birthday. The sculptor Jakob Wilhelm Steger designed the approximately 20-meter-wide structure with three sandstone walls and stone benches. In the center, there is a relief of Scheffel, alongside portraits of his friends Franz Huber and Eduard Witter. A poetic saying honors the connection to the hills of the Palatinate.
The Scheffel Watchtower is situated at an elevation of 264 meters on the southeast slope of the Wolfsberg and offers a beautiful view of the Rhine Valley thanks to trimmed vegetation. It is easily reachable on foot via several hiking trails, including the famous Palatinate Wine Trail. The monument combines cultural value with nature-based recreation and is a popular destination for hikers and literature lovers.
