Wer ist überhaupt der Pumphut? Martin Pumphut ist eine Sagengestalt aus der Oberlausitz. Er wird meist als Müllerbursche mit spitzem Hut porträtiert und verfügt über große magische Fähigkeiten. Dies brachte ihm auch den Beinamen Hexenmeister der Oberlausitz ein.
Seine magische Kraft kommt von einem Zauberhut, der spitz zuläuft und eine breite Krempe hat. Der Hut ist auch der Namensgeber von Pumphut, da damals die Pumpenbauer solche Hüte trugen.
Der Oberlausitzer Müllergeselle wanderte im Land umher und zog von Mühle zu Mühle. Wo es ihm gefiel, da blieb er.
Für eine gute Herberge und reichlich zu essen belohne er die Leute mit allerei Späßen und half ihnen bei der Arbeit. Wo man geizig war, wurde es dem Müller mit argen Streichen heimgezahlt.
