The Mithras monument in Reichweiler is a cult image that originally belonged to a Roman settlement as part of a temple.
Roman soldiers brought the cult of Mithras from Persia to Germania in the 1st century AD. Mithras rides on a fleeing bull, plunging a knife into the animal's neck, accompanied by a lion, snake and scorpion. Above them are the sun god and moon goddess.
The Mithraeum is located near a small pond belonging to the Saarland municipality of Freisen, which also maintains the cultural monument. The Mithraeum can be reached directly from the Fritz-Wunderlich cycling and hiking trail.
