The monument known as "The Lion of Kandel" was erected in 1927 according to a design by the government architect Max Schön from Munich. The execution was carried out by the sculptor Heinrich Huber from Kaiserslautern.
No fewer than 72 designs were presented to the Kandel municipal council at that time, after it had already approved the construction of a war memorial in 1921.
