The sculptor Johannes Pfuhl (1846 - 1914) created the design for the fountain, the work of art was cast in 1898 in the Lauchhammer iron foundry. It was unveiled on 31 October 1898. It was originally located near the town hall. Today there is the city bridge. The fountain had to give way for the construction of the border clearance facilities and was erected in the Friedenspark in 1972, but it was no longer used as a fountain.
Local granite from Döbschütz is the material for the base of the fountain. The figure of the shoemaker-philosopher sits on the base. He has put aside the shoemaker's tools. With the Bible open on his knees and a pen in his hand, he seems to be gazing into the distance.
On the back, a plaque leans against the cobbler's stool with the text: "Love and humility - our sword." In his philosophical works, Jacob Böhme dealt, among other things, with the ideas of the necessity of renewal and perfection of man and society, with man's own responsibility for his spiritual maturing and for striving for the original oneness with creation.
