Protože se knihovna v Polné na Jihlavsku otevírala v roce 1915, tedy v době, kdy se slavilo 500. výročí upálení Mistra Jana Husa, pojmenovali ji na památku podle něj.

V Polné nedaleko Jihlavy bylo založeno už v 19. století několik knihoven, jako například učitelská, obrozenecká a spolek Čtenářská beseda. Počátkem 20. století byla jedna obecní a osm spolkových knihoven sloučeny v jednu.

Oficiálně byl zahájen její provoz 6. června 1915. V témže roce se slavilo 500. výročí upálení Mistra Jana Husa a k uctění jeho památky byla knihovna pojmenována Husova knihovna.

Knihovna v Polné zavedla v roce 1930 jako první v republice volný přístup čtenáře ke knize, to znamená, že čtenář si vybírá knihu přímo z regálů.
