Der Tempel entstand etwa zur gleichen Zeit wie die Kaiserpaläste der Ming- und Qing-Dynastien im 15. Jahrhundert. Man glaubte, dass es nur dann Wohlstand auf der Erde geben könne, wenn im gesamten Makrokosmos Harmonie herrsche. Aus diesem Grund musste der Kaiser einmal im Jahr eine Art Zwiegespräch mit dem Himmel führen, um große Naturkatastrophen zu vermeiden. Denn laut Konfuzius ist für den einfachen Menschen das Essen der Himmel.
Die Tempelanlage liegt inmitten des Tiantan-Parks und wurde von der UNESCO als Welterbe anerkannt, weil seine meisterwerkliche Architektur andere ostasiatische Kulturen stark beeinflusst hat.
