Der gläserne Obelisk von Steinbach a.Wald ist ein Symbol – er steht für die lokale Glasindustrie, die hier Tradition hat, und ist zugleich ein Bekenntnis zum hiesigen Lebensraum. Die Stelle für den Obelisken wurde bewusst gewählt: Die Skulptur steht inmitten des ersten großen Kreisverkehrs im Landkreis Kronach – dort, wo die Wasserscheide zwischen Elbe und Rhein liegt und der berühmte Höhenwanderweg namens Rennsteig verläuft. Die Wasserscheide wird übrigens ebenfalls von einem Obelisken markiert, der bereits aus dem Jahr 1850 stammt. Er steht nicht weit entfernt von hier an der Kreuzung der Bundesstraße 85 mit dem Rennsteig. Der gläserne Obelisk greift also ein historisches Vorbild auf.

Die Idee zu dem neuen Obelisken aus Glas hatte eine Studentin der Fachhochschule für Design in Coburg. Ihr Entwurf machte den ersten Platz bei dem Ideenwettbewerb zur Gestaltung des Kreisverkehrs. Der acht Meter hohe und zweieinhalb Meter breite Obelisk wurde im Jahr 2003 errichtet. Er besteht aus einzelnen Glasscheiben, die auf einem Metallgerüst angebracht sind. Auf die Glasscheiben sind blaue Glassplitter aufgeschmolzen, in denen sich das Sonnenlicht bricht. Beeindruckend ist der Obelisk aber auch, wenn es dunkel wird: Nachts wird er von innen beleuchtet und ist schon von Weitem als blaue Lichtsäule erkennbar.Das Glitzern und Leuchten des Obelisken ist ein Signal, das sich einprägt – bei der einheimischen Bevölkerung genauso wie bei den Besucher des Ortes und den Durchreisenden: Das Leuchten steht für die Stärke dieser Region und ihrer Wirtschaft. Und es macht Mut, sich auch künftig hier zu engagieren. Ganz in diesem Sinne wurde der Obelisk mit den Worten eingeweiht. „Möge er in eine gute Zukunft leuchten!“
