Evangelische Kirche
The Protestant church below the castle dates from 1905/06, but the choir is late Gothic. Old building plans suggest that the first church was certainly built in late Romanesque times (13th century).
After the great fire in Gemünden around 1460, in which the church was probably also destroyed, a single-nave church was built on the old foundation walls between 1440 and 1480. In 1897 the Simultaneum was dissolved and the church inventory was purchased by the Protestant church. In 1901/02 the tower had to be largely demolished due to dilapidation. In 1905/06 the nave and the chancel square were demolished. Subsequently, a single-nave neo-Gothic nave was built while retaining the late Gothic choir. In the 16th and 17th centuries, members of the Schmidtburg family were buried in the church and a number of valuable life-size funerary monuments were created, three of which are still preserved today. The monument to the first Schmidtburg (Fritz Schenk von Schmidtburg), originally placed on the south side, has been in the private chapel in Gemünden Castle since 1904. When the Lutheran church was rebuilt in 1906, several grave slabs that had previously been in the floor of the choir were moved to the outer wall.
