Die im Jahr 1992 errichtete Sandsteinsäule markiert die Grenzen der ehemaligen Landkreise Emmendingen (EM), Lahr (LR) und Wolfach (WO).

Der historische Grenzstein von 1585 trennte die alten Gaugrafschaften Breisgau und Ortenau sowie die Diözesen der Bischöfe von Konstanz und Straßburg.

Mit der Kreisreform zum 1. Januar 1973 verloren Lahr und Wolfach ihre Selbständigkeit und wurden dem neugebildeten Ortenaukreis als dem flächengrößten Landkreis von Baden-Württemberg zugeschlagen.
