Seit dem 12. Juli 2007 liegt Oelsnitz/Erzgeb. offiziell wieder am Äquator. Das glauben Sie nicht? Es ist aber so. Naja zumindest war es so vor 310 Millionen Jahren. Da nämlich verlief durch unseren Teil Europas die Äquatorlinie. Woher man das weiß? Nachweislich bildeten sich Steinkohlenlagerstätten nur am Äquator. So entstand auch das Lugau-Oelsnitzer-Steinkohlerevier im Bereich eines äquatorialischen Gebirgszuges. Und um dies der Stadt und ihren Besuchern zu zeigen und unvergesslich zu machen, wurde im Rahmen des Ausbaus der Badstraße ein symbolischer Äquator erschaffen.
