The cruiser was named after the sailing frigate Aurora, which became famous during the defense of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky during the Crimean War.
During the Russian-Japanese War, he participated in the campaign of the Second Pacific Squadron, which ended in the Battle of Tsushima. The cruiser also took part in the First World War. A blank shot from the Aurora was the signal to begin the assault on the Winter Palace; the cruiser became one of the main symbols of the October Revolution.
Since 1948, in a parking lot at the Petrogradskaya embankment at the source of the Bolshaya Nevka. The cruiser moved several times to carry out repairs, the last time it returned to the parking lot on July 16, 2016.
The cruiser "Aurora" is an object of cultural heritage of the Russian Federation.
